Charminar, Hyderabad

The Charminar is an iconic mosque and monument located in the heart of Hyderabad, India. Constructed in 1591, it stands as a quintessential example of Indo-Islamic architecture combined with Persian influences. The structure's name, Charminar, translates to "Four Towers" or "Four Minarets," reflecting its most prominent features.

Rising to a height of 48.7 meters, the Charminar was built by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, to commemorate the founding of the city of Hyderabad. It is said that the monument was erected at the very spot where the Sultan prayed for the end of a devastating plague that had struck the region.

The square structure of the Charminar is made of granite and lime-mortar, measuring 20 meters on each side. Each side opens into a plaza through giant arches, which overlook the bustling bazaars that have been a part of the city's history for centuries. At each corner stands an exquisitely detailed minaret, 56 meters high with a double balcony. A spiral staircase inside each minaret leads to the upper floor offering panoramic views of the city.

The mosque is located on the western end of the open roof and remains an active site of worship. Despite being centuries old, the Charminar has withstood the test of time and remains one of the most recognized and well-preserved monuments in India.
