Levant water frog

The Levant water frog, formerly categorized under the genus Rana, is a captivating species native to southern Europe. These frogs exhibit vibrant hues ranging from green to brown, often adorned with dark markings on their backs, making them quite striking. Closely related to aquatic frogs, they predominantly inhabit watery environments.

An intriguing fact about the Levant water frog is their non-toxicity and relatively large size, with females being notably larger than males. Although native to southern Europe, these frogs have also spread to regions outside their natural habitat, such as Malta. In the 1990s, they were introduced to freshwater rock pools in Gozo, initially as pets. Over time, they established a substantial population in one of these pools.
