Road safety

Roads are generally in excellent condition. However, winter driving can be hazardous, particularly in mountainous areas, where roads can be winding and are not always plowed. Snow chains are recommended. In the event of an accident, motorists should make an official report to police. Dial 140 for roadside assistance.

Hiking

If you intend on hiking, backpacking or skiing:never practice these activities alone and always hire an experienced guide from a reputable company. Buy travel insurance that includes helicopter rescue and medical evacuation. Obtain detailed information on hiking routes or ski slopes before setting out and do not venture off marked trails or slopes. Ensure that your physical condition is good enough to meet the challenges of your activity. Ensure that you are properly equipped and well informed about weather and other conditions that may pose a hazard. Inform a family member or friend of your itinerary. Know the symptoms of acute altitude sickness, which can be fatal.

Public transportation

Buses to the capital, Vaduz, are available from the Swiss border towns of Buchs and Sargans, and from the Austrian border town of Feldkirch. Note that the train from Zurich, Switzerland to Vienna, Austria, stops in Feldkirch. Public transportation is excellent. Post Bus offers an inexpensive and reliable way to travel within the country.

Women's safety

Liechtestein is generally safe, women travelling alone should maintain personal security awareness. Avoid dark or non-tourist areas at night. Instead try to be around larger crowds, whether they are fellow tourists or local citizens. Women, particularly foreigners may be subject to unwanted male attention and catcalls in certain places. Be vigilant if approached by strangers seeking assistance and exercise increased caution throughout your travel.

Crime

The crime rate is low. Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, occurs. Exercise caution on trains, especially on overnight trips to neighbouring countries, as there have been incidents of theft. Store your valuables in a safe place, and do not leave your compartment unattended. Ensure that the door is secured from the inside.

Terrorism

There is a threat of terrorism. Terrorist attacks could occur at any time. Terrorist targets could include government buildings, places of worship, schools, airports and other transportation hubs, as well as public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels and sites frequented by foreigners. Be aware of your surroundings at all times in public places. Stay at hotels that have robust security measures, however, keep in mind that even the most secure locations cannot be considered completely free of risk.

LGBT

Liechtenstein is building a tradition of tolerance towards homosexuality. Open and public discrimination against LGBT people is extremely rare and almost completely unheard of. Same-sex couples and LGBT people more generally face little social differences compared to heterosexuals and are accepted and tolerated.

Driving

You can drive with a driver's licence in Liechtenstein, but an International Driving Permit is recommended in order to meet the requirements of some car rental agencies.
