Climate of Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein is located in the warm temperate climate zone, however, due to the varied terrain and altitude, the weather in different areas can vary slightly from one another.

Low-lying areas (the Rhine plain) are characterized by warm summers and mild winters. Temperatures in the warmest months fluctuate between 20°C and 25°C, while in the coldest months they generally do not fall below 0°C. Characteristic phenomena are quite heavy rains (about 700 mm per year) and accompanying storms. Weather is also influenced by warm foehn winds blowing from the south.

In mountainous areas (the Rhaetian Alps) there is a mountain climate, along with climatic stacking. It is somewhat harsher, with air temperatures lower than in other areas and dependent on the altitude (the higher, the colder). In winter, high in the mountains there is frost reaching as low as -10°C. Precipitation is year-round - above 1,500 mm. In the coldest months occurring mainly in the form of snow. At altitudes above 1,800 meters above sea level, snow cover persists from November to May, while in lower-lying areas from December to March. Dense fog often persists in the lower parts of the mountains and basins.
