Malta Jazz Festival

The Malta Jazz Festival is a must-attend annual event that jazz enthusiasts eagerly mark on their calendars. Held every July in the picturesque setting of Malta, this festival is organized by Festivals Malta and has been a cornerstone of the jazz scene since its inception in 1990 by Charles 'City' Gatt.

Over the years, the festival has earned a reputation for showcasing some of the biggest names in jazz. Legends such as Wayne Shorter, Diana Krall, Chick Corea, and Al Di Meola have all graced its stage. Although the festival encountered turbulence in 2006 due to a contentious change in leadership, it made a triumphant return to its jazz roots in 2009 under the guidance of Sandro Zerafa.

Since then, the Malta Jazz Festival has continued to attract world-class musicians. Artists like Bill Stewart, Ari Hoenig, Dave Weckl, Lionel Loueke, and Avishai Cohen have all performed, captivating audiences with their extraordinary talent. The festival is known for its diverse lineup that blends established jazz icons with emerging talents, making each year a fresh and exciting experience.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival adapted by incorporating virtual elements and archival content, ensuring that the jazz spirit thrived despite global challenges.

Held at various stunning locations around Valletta, the festival creates an enchanting atmosphere that complements the music. Performers such as Mike Stern, Snarky Puppy, Mark Guiliana, Chick Corea, John Patitucci, and Dave Weckl have delivered unforgettable performances. The festival also proudly features local Maltese acts, providing them with a platform to shine alongside international stars.
