De Traanroeier, Texel
Facts and practical information
The Traanroeier is a corn mill in Oudeschild on the Dutch island of Texel.
The mill was placed in Oudeschild in 1902, but before that it stood in Zaandam as a peeling mill. It was the first mill to be built in Oudeschild, but corn mills had been present on Texel since 1383. Nowadays, the mill is the only corn mill left on the island. Already in 1935 the mill fell out of use. The mill was saved from ruin in 1943 when the municipality of Texel bought it. In 1963 an extensive restoration followed, in which the mill was fitted with a generator to generate electricity. Various devices were used to enable the mill to run without further control. However, it was not a success and so the mill was restored as a corn mill again in 1999. Since 2000, the mill has been owned by the Foundation for the Preservation of Mill De Traanroeier. It can be viewed on the grounds of Kaap Skil, a maritime museum.
The rods are 22.50 meters long and are equipped with the Dekker system in combination with self-sealing and brake valves. The mill is equipped with two pairs of millstones with regulators and there are also some remnants of the electricity generation period present. A volunteer miller operates the mill very regularly.
