De Kemphaan, Texel
Facts and practical information
The Kemphaan is a meadow mill on the Wadden Island of Texel that was built to flood a bird sanctuary in polder Waalenburg. The mill is located exactly between the village of De Waal and the hamlet of Burger Nieuwland and is owned by Vereniging Natuurmonumenten. In 1957 the mill was given the characteristics of a hollow post mill.
Due to an autumn storm in 2008, a blade of the outer rudder was broken off and the blades of the inner rudder were damaged, which meant that the mill was no longer millable. In the summer of 2009 the mill was completely repaired and is therefore once again ready for grinding. In addition to this mill, there are also two real meadow mills in the reserve. Since 1969 the bird sanctuary has been electrically drained with a steel auger.
The inner rod of the gable is Old Dutch. The outer pulley has Fauel sails. The upper wheel and the bonkelaar are made of cast iron and fitted with wooden combs. The mill has a Flemish catch on a separate catch wheel, with which the mill can be stopped.
De Kemphaan received a wooden auger in 1996 with a head of 1.25 m. Before that the mill had a wooden, so-called rudderom.
The mill has municipal monument status.
