Bernisse Molen
Facts and practical information
The Bernisse Mill is a former corn mill in the town of Geervliet, in the Dutch municipality of Nissewaard. From 1964 the mill housed a restaurant below and although the two pairs of grinding stones are present in the mill, the mill is not grinding. The Bernisse Mill is built on a former defense tower, of which the loopholes are still visible. As early as 1383 a mill was built on the city wall. The present stone mill dates from 1851 and was in operation until 1947. In 1949 and in 1984 the Bernisse mill was restored. The previous owners had occupied a large part of the mill with the former restaurant. With the exception of the tower on which the Bernisse Mill is built, the city wall has completely disappeared.
In spring 2017, the restaurant business was declared bankrupt. On December 31, 2019, the mill was sold to a couple who moved into the bottom of the mill.
The mill turns very regularly and can be visited when the sails are turning. The exact times are indicated on a sign at the front door.
