Facts About Ginanggang
Ginanggang, also known as guinanggang or ginang-gang, is a cherished Filipino snack that originates from the island of Mindanao. This delightful treat features skewered bananas that are grilled, then brushed with margarine and sprinkled with sugar. The name "ginanggang" is derived from the Cebuano word for "grilled."
The variety of bananas used for ginanggang is known as saba, also referred to as Cardaba bananas in the Philippines. To prepare ginanggang, you begin by peeling the saba bananas and skewering them. They are then grilled over charcoal until they develop a light char. After grilling, the bananas are brushed with margarine and generously sprinkled with white sugar. This is a key difference from banana cue, which uses caramelized sugar instead.
Every year, the community of Barangay Poblacion in Tubod, Lanao del Norte, celebrates the Ginanggang Festival. Held on the second Sunday of May in honor of San Isidro Labrador, the festival showcases the cultural significance of ginanggang in the local area.
