Facts About Tokneneng
Tokneneng is a cherished Filipino street food reminiscent of tempura. It is prepared by deep-frying hard-boiled eggs coated in a vibrant orange batter. A similar dish, kwek kwek, features quail eggs instead of the duck eggs used in tokneneng. Due to their similarities, these two dishes are often confused.
Typically, tokneneng is served with a spiced vinegar-based dip that provides a tangy kick. The name "tokneneng" has an intriguing origin; it comes from the 1978 Filipino comic series "Batute." In the language created by the main character Batute, tokneneng translates to 'egg.'
