Facts About Dinagyang
The Dinagyang Festival is a highly celebrated religious and cultural event held every fourth Sunday of January in Iloilo City, Philippines. Drawing inspiration from the Ati-Atihan Festival in Aklan, Dinagyang has earned the title of the "Queen of all festivals" in the country. The festival's origins date back to 1967, when devotion to Santo Niño (the Holy Child Jesus) was introduced to Iloilo. Since then, it has blossomed into a grand affair, garnering numerous awards for its cultural richness and innovative spirit.
The festival is brimming with a variety of events that attract both locals and tourists alike. Among the highlights is the Ati Tribe Competition, where tribes perform energetic, choreographed dances to the beat of drums, adorned in stunning costumes and body paint. Other notable events include Dagyang sa Calle Real and Miss Iloilo Dinagyang, along with the Kasadyahan Cultural competition, which showcases the region's diverse talents and heritage.
Dinagyang has made a significant impact on festival culture in the Philippines by introducing several innovations. These include the Carousel Performance, Mobile Risers, and Dinagyang Pipes, all of which have added unique dimensions to the celebrations. Additionally, in 2002, the festival introduced Dagoy, its official mascot. Symbolizing joy and friendship, Dagoy has become an iconic figure that embodies the spirit of Dinagyang.
