Opalony Wierch, Tatra National Park
Facts and practical information
Opalony Wierch - a peak with two summits located in the long northeastern ridge of Szpiglasowy Wierch in the Polish High Tatras. It is separated from the Copper Peak by Marchwiczna Przełęcz. From the lower summit there are two ridge lines going through the valley of Swistik Roztocka. The shorter arm, going towards Dolina Pięciu Stawów Polskich, is finished with Świstowa Czuba. The right ridge, about 3.0 km long, forms the grassy ridge of Mt Opalony. The ridge ends with Roztocka Czuba, a small forested peak overlooking the Mickiewicz's Waterfalls. The slopes of the mountain are crossed by numerous gullies, through which powerful avalanches descend. The biggest of them are: Deep Gorge, Gendarmerie Gorge and White Gorge.
Miedziane and Opalony Wierch are in the strict protection area. They are the refuge of chamois and the place of bear occurrence. The name Opalone was used already in the 18th century.
The peak has long been visited by mountaineers. The first tourist ascent in summer is not known. The oldest recorded winter ascent - during the ridge crossing to Miedziane - Henryk Bednarski, L. Michalski on April 17, 1911. The second winter ascent on Opalony Wierch was made in 1911 by Tadeusz Korniłowicz and Mariusz Zaruski.
Rare plants include the bent-leaved feldspar, the Hungarian honeysuckle, and the large-headed saussurea - species found in Poland only in the Tatra Mountains and only in a few locations. There is also rare Scots pine.
