Fort I - Zakroczym, Zakroczym
Facts and practical information
Fort Zakroczym - one of the forts of the Modlin Fortress, built as part of the construction of the first ring of forts in the 1880s.
The fort is located in Zakroczym. Its task was to close the western part of the fortress.
Built according to the model fort "F1879" was a structure with two fronts and two shoulders. Unusual for this type of fort, the neck was broken and quite significantly moved back towards the center of the fortification, to obtain a better field of fire for the neck from the caponier. Modernized many times, it now has brick, two-storey barracks and a number of concrete elements: caponies and counter escarpment, numerous shelters and a large, three-storey neck caponier, which also serves as a traditory between forts.
The fort was not in the direction of the German attack in 1915. During the occupation it was a transit camp for deported Warsaw citizens. A plaque commemorates these events.
Currently, the fort houses a local food cooperative. There are no plans for tourist adaptation of the fort, which would be facilitated by its location near the important road S7 - Warsaw-Gdańsk.
