Fort III - Pomiechówek
Facts and practical information
Fort III - one of the forts of the Modlin Fortress, built as part of the construction of the first ring of forts in the 1880s.
The fort was built in Pomiechówek, on a hill on the right bank of the Wkra River. The basis for its design was the model fort "F1879". The structure was erected in 1883-1888 as the largest fort of the fortress. Later, it was modernised several times; a modern escarpment caponier and traditory were constructed. Today the brick barracks and the neck caponier have been preserved in very good condition.
In 1915 the fort was on the main direction of the German attack, but the fights for it took place in the period of the end of Russian resistance. In 1939 it was included in the Polish defense position, and after the fall of Modlin Fortress it was the place where its defenders were imprisoned. In 1941-1945 there was a Gestapo penal and investigative prison in Fort III in Pomiechówek, which was a place of execution for the inhabitants of Ciechanow region.
Currently, the fort is the property of the Military Property Agency. It can be visited in organized groups only through the Modlin Fortress Military Park Foundation.
