Igła Deotymy, Ojców National Park
Facts and practical information
Deotyma's Needle - a prominence in the Prądnik Valley in Ojców National Park at the mouth of the Wrześnik Gorge.
It is a characteristic, built of Jurassic rocky limestone slender rock needle. It was formed as a result of karst processes. The name of the rock comes from the word Deotyma - Jadwiga Łuszczewska's literary pseudonym. It was given in honor of the poetess's visit to Ojców in 1853. Apparently, she lived in the villa "Pod Koroną", next to Deotyma's Needle, and it was here in the Prądnik Valley that she drew inspiration for her poems.
Deotyma's Needle rises alone on the east side of the Prądnik stream, between Panieńskie Rocks and Kawalerskie Rocks. Next to the rock there are single dwellings of local residents. The rock is not available for rock climbing. Father's birches grow in its surroundings, a very rare species, known from only a few localities. It is entwined with grapevine, the leaves of which change color in autumn into intense red.
