Igreja do Loreto, Lisbon
Facts and practical information
The Church of Loreto, is located next to Largo do Chiado, making a corner with Rua da Misericórdia, in Lisbon. The author of the project to build this church was José da Costa e Silva. With the earthquake of 1755 the temple suffered great damage, and was rebuilt in 1785.
The church, also called Igreja dos Italianos was raised by D. João V in 1518 to accommodate the many Italians, mainly Venetians and Genoese, merchants in Lisbon. It depends directly on the Holy See, and is suffragan of the archibasilica of Saint John Lateran.
This church consists of a central nave with twelve side chapels that present the twelve apostles. These chapels are clad in Italian marble. On the main facade, besides the image of Our Lady of Loreto, one can observe the pontifical arms, by Borromini, flanked by two angels. It also has a pipe organ dating from the 18th century, whose authorship is not well defined.
When the Cerca de D. Fernando was built, the north tower of the Porta de Santa Catarina was built right next to the church of Loreto.
