Piton d'Anchaing
Facts and practical information
The piton d'Anchaing, d'Enchaing or d'Anchain is a mountainous peak on the island of Reunion, a French overseas department in the southwestern Indian Ocean. Culminating at 1 356 meters above sea level, it overlooks the center of the natural cirque of Salazie, where it would have slipped after being detached from the Gros Morne. It owes its name to the legendary maroon slave called Anchaing, who would have chosen it as a refuge in his escape.
The Piton d'Anchaing is, along with La Grande Chaloupe, the Mare Longue forest and the Chapelle de Cilaos, one of the four natural sites in Reunion Island that are not part of the Reunion National Park, or not entirely, but are nevertheless part of the Pitons, Cirques and Remparts of Reunion Island, a World Heritage Site since 2010.
