Ruine Bertholdstein
Facts and practical information
The Burgus of Hollenburg was part of the Roman Danube Limes in Austria, province of Lower Austria, district of Krems-Stadt, town of Krems an der Donau/district of Hollenburg.
The watchtower was located on the southern bank of the Danube, at the former northern outwork of Bertholdstein Castle. Roman wall remains were found on a truncated cone-shaped rocky outcrop, on which the foundations of the castle were mothballed. There are no visible remains today as the site was destroyed during road construction in the early 1980s. The burial grounds in the southwestern and southeastern environs of the burgus date for the most part from Late Antiquity and mark the course of the ancient Limes road via Kleedorf in a southwesterly direction or further west through Hollenburg.
