Schloss Wolfsberg
Facts and practical information
Wolfsberg Castle is a castle near Angern in Lower Austria.
Wolfsberg Castle is located on the steep slope of a high terrace towards the Danube. Below the castle lies the village of Angern, a cadastral municipality of Krems on the Danube. The castle was built around 1531 in Renaissance style over a medieval estate. Major structural changes took place in the 17th as well as 19th centuries, when its towers were added to the castle. During the First World War it took in numerous Galician refugees.
Wolfsberg Castle has had numerous owners in its history. From the 13th century it repeatedly came into the possession of the monastery of Göttweig. From the 15th to the 17th century, the castle mostly belonged to the family Edler von Geyer.
After a convalescent home had been operated by the Vienna City Employees' Hospital from 1922, the religious order Servants of the Sacred Heart of Jesus ran first a convalescent home and then, from 1960, a home for the elderly from 1934 to 1989. In 1989, the nuns sold the property to a real estate agency. In 1992 the castle was sold to the doctor and chemist Birkmayer, who wanted to convert it into a center for health and recreation. Due to the death of his daughter, he lost interest in this project. In 2006, as the last owners of the castle so far, the Nikolaus Fuchs family from South Tyrol acquired the property and registered a pseudo-medicine and esoteric business there.
