Valchitran Treasure

The Valchitran Treasure is an extraordinary Thracian find that was discovered on December 28, 1924, by two brothers working in their vineyard near the village of Valchitran, approximately 22 kilometers southeast of Pleven, Bulgaria. This treasure comprises an impressive collection of 13 items of various shapes and sizes, all crafted from gold, with a total weight of 12.5 kilograms. The assortment includes round platters, domed pieces, cups, a jug, leaf-shaped vessels, and a bowl with handles.

Interestingly, the gold used for these items contains a natural admixture of 9.7% silver. Experts have dated the treasure to circa 1300 BC, placing it within the period of the Thracians. Today, the Valchitran Treasure is housed at the National Archaeological Museum in Sofia, Bulgaria, where it is regarded as one of the institution’s most valuable exhibits.
