Musée de la Grande Chartreuse, Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse
Facts and practical information
Created in 1957, the Grande Chartreuse museum aims to enlighten visitors on the Carthusian order, their 900 years of history, their way of life as well as on the Grande Chartreuse and its architecture. The museum is located in the heart of the Carthusian desert and the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park in a group of 17th-19th century monastic buildings known as the "lower houses" of the Grande Chartreuse monastery. These old buildings were once used as living quarters and workshops for the lay brothers; over the centuries they successively housed a printing press and an infirmary for the sick Fathers. The site of the Correrie, located below the monastery, was chosen for the museum because it allows the flow of visitors to be held back downstream from the monastery, a twenty-minute walk from it.
The label Musée de France was awarded by the Ministry of Culture in recognition of the museum's interest and its museographic quality. The director of the museum is Philip Boyer.
