Kumhrar, Patna
Facts and practical information
Kumhrar, nestled within the bustling city of Patna in India, stands as a testament to the ancient city of Pataliputra, the capital of many empires in Indian history, most notably the Mauryan dynasty. As an archaeological site, Kumhrar offers a rare glimpse into the architectural and cultural grandeur that characterized one of the greatest cities of ancient India.
Excavations at Kumhrar have unearthed significant artifacts and structural remains that date back to the Mauryan period (322–185 BCE) and beyond. Among the most striking finds is the remains of a massive wooden hall, believed to be the ancient assembly hall of the Mauryan empire, known as the 'Hypostyle 80-pillar hall'. Only a single pillar remains standing today, but the site's layout indicates a grand structure that would have once stood there.
Additionally, the site has revealed a number of other relics, including coins, terracotta figures, pottery, and ancient pathways. These discoveries provide invaluable insights into the urban planning, governance, and daily life of Pataliputra's inhabitants. The archaeological efforts at Kumhrar also brought to light a Mauryan-era park complete with a water tank, which showcases the sophistication of the leisure spaces designed for the ruling classes of the time.
Kumhrar is open to the public, offering visitors a chance to connect with India’s ancient history. While much of the site has yet to be excavated, and many of its treasures still lie buried beneath modern Patna, the excavated remains are carefully preserved.
Despite the site's significance, it remains less frequented by tourists compared to other historical sites in India. However, those who do visit find themselves transported back in time, as they walk among the ruins that once formed the heart of a mighty empire. The government has taken measures to protect and promote the site, ensuring that it remains an important cultural and educational resource.
