Facts About Vipera palaestinae
The Palestine viper, scientifically known as Daboia palaestinae, is a venomous snake indigenous to the Levant region. It is one of the primary species responsible for snakebites in its range. Typically, these vipers measure between 70 to 90 cm in length, although they can grow as long as 130 cm.
These snakes are found across northern and central Israel, Palestine, western Syria, northwestern Jordan, and Lebanon. They thrive in various habitats and have a substantial population, which is why they are listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
The taxonomy of Daboia palaestinae has been a topic of debate among experts, with various classifications proposed over the years. Notably, in 2018, this snake was designated as Israel's national snake.
