These pastries are especially enjoyed in December, coinciding with Sinterklaasavond in the Netherlands, and they also make appearances at various festivals in the US.

The term "Dutch letter" derives from the Dutch word "banketletter." In the Netherlands, you might also hear them referred to as "banketstaven" or "letterbanket." These pastries are a traditional treat for Sinterklaasavond. Dutch immigrants brought this tradition to the US, where it has become a significant part of communities like Pella, Iowa. Here, Dutch letters are a staple at events such as the Tulip Festival. In Holland, Michigan, you can even find Dutch letters with a chocolate filling during the Holland Dutch Winterfest.
