Długi Giewont, Tatra National Park
Facts and practical information
Długi Giewont is a long ridge of the Giewont massif in the West Tatra Mountains. It is separated from the main peak called Great Giewont by the Szczerba Pass.
At its highest point, located just above Szczerba, it reaches a height of 1867 m. Long Giewont Ridge of 1.3 km stretches from Szczerba in north-eastern direction to the Wrótka Pass separating it from the Kalacka Kopa. Ridge is relatively even, there are only small indentations and crags. In the order from Szczerba eastwards they are: Szczerbinka, Juhaska Turnia, Juhaska Przehyba, Juhaska Kopa, Wyżnie Wrótka, Turnia nad Bialy, Wrótka.
The steep northern wall, with a relative height of 620 m rises above the Strążyska Valley and the White Valley. Slightly less steep southern slopes descend to the Bystrá Valley and the Kondratowa Valley. In the top parts are bare and very steeply undercut rocks. Under the bare rocks there is a grassy Wielki Upłaz, lower slopes are covered with dwarf pine and forest. They are cut by several gullies, in the direction from Szczerba to the east these are: Koński Żleb, Krówski Żleb, Suchy Żleb, Urwany Żleb and Żleb pod Wrótka. The names of some of the rungs indicate that they were once grazed.
Long Giewont is built of limestone Jurassic, belonging to the mantle of Giewont and falling at an angle of 80 degrees to the north.
Long Giewont is inaccessible for tourists. In its area recorded accidents among tourists and mountaineers. There are climbing routes for mountaineers, but now TPN prohibited climbing in this area. In 1852, the first parish priest in Zakopane, Father Joseph Stolarczyk while climbing on the ridge of Długie Giewont stuck in the rocks and could not get out on his own. He was pulled out only with the help of ropes, called by screaming shepherds, grazing on Hala Kondratowa.
Plant species found here are rare in Poland, including: rock cherry, Carpathian sharp-tailed godwit, Hacquet's guenon and spotted oman.
