Upłaziańska Kopa, Tatra National Park
Facts and practical information
Upłazianska Kopa - a domed peak in the long northwestern ridge of Ciemniak in the Red Peaks in the Western Tatras. It is located below Chuda Turnia, separated from it by the Kopa Pass. Wladyslaw Cywinski in his detailed guidebook writes: "Upłazianska Kopa is one of the few peaks in the Tatras about which it can be said that from all exact sides, it is accessible without the slightest difficulty. It is accessible from all sides without any technical, orienteering or vegetation difficulties". Uplazianska Kopa is a summit of great topographic importance since there are five ridge crests, perches or ridges separating five valleys: Malá štítka, Nariisky štítka, Pisaniarski štítka, Przednie Kamienne, Zadnie Kamienne.
In the past Upłazianska Kopa was a pasture area of Hala Upłaz and from the name of this hall comes its name. Very intensive pastoralism in this place led to great erosion of the slopes, which became almost a desert. Shepherding was eliminated and the slopes cicatrized. A remnant of the pastoral past is the nomenclature in this area. There are springs with water in the north-western slopes, the place is called Karczma and there is a plain above it called Rówień nad Karczmą; the northern slopes are called Gładkie Upłaziańskie and the north-eastern slopes are called Źródliska. Below Źródliska there is also a plateau above Piec, which also belongs to the massif of Uplazianske Kopa.
The slopes of Uplazianska Kopa are covered with low grass. In places there are clumps of dwarf pine, which since the cessation of grazing has been gradually expanding its range. Rare plants include alpine marsh and three-spotted rush - species occurring in Poland only in the Tatra Mountains and only in a few places.
