City Hall, Tatra National Park
Facts and practical information
Ratusz - a crag in the Kościeliska Valley in the Tatra Mountains. Together with the Saturn, located near it, are well visible from the Polana Pisana. The name was given by former tourists. Built of carbonate rocks, smaller than Saturn has a height of 1296 m. It is located in the orographically right slopes of the Krakow Gorge. It is separated from Saturn by a passage behind the Town Hall. Only from this pass it is possible to ascend it without major difficulties - on all other sides vertical walls descend. There are several climbing routes in them. Particularly impressive is its southwest pillar falling to the Square below the Town Hall, which is about 170 m high. It is partially overhanging. The first ascent of the lower part of the pillar and a 40 meter high ledge was made by Jerzy Łabęcki and Ryszard Malczyk in April 1970. The first ascent of the upper part was made by Jerzy Farat and Ryszard Malczyk on April 12, 1981. This route, called by them "From Here to Eternity", contains a large accumulation of difficulties of grade VI+.
Under the wall of the Town Hall is a cave called the Gap in the Town Hall.
On the south-eastern side of the City Hall there is an originally shaped, long rock formation with a very sharp ridge, called "the fin" by Wladyslaw Cywinski in the 3rd volume of his Tatra guidebook. It belongs to the Ratusz massif, but is separated from it by a forested gully that widens in its lower part and descends to the bottom of the Cracow Gorge. The northeastern end of this rock formation descends to the Basin below Saturn.
