Church of the Sacred Heart, Płock
Facts and practical information
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the Imielnica estate in Plock belongs to the parish of St. James the Apostle.
The history of the parish dates back to the 12th century. In 1413 it received an indulgence from Pope Martin V. In the 16th century it was taken over by cathedral mansions. In 1598 the wooden church had two chapels. The main altar was made of brick and had a carved altarpiece. Another wooden church was erected in the years 1836-1837, according to the project of Miklaszewski, at the expense of Jan Weynerth. Since 1900, when sugar factory was established in nearby Borowiczki, it was decided to build a bigger and more spacious church. In 1927, the then parish priest, Wladyslaw Skierkowski, started to build a new church designed by Bruno Zborowski. Construction was completed in 1935, and the act of consecration was performed by Bishop Leon Wetmanski. During the occupation the Germans arrested Father Skierkowski and deported him to the German concentration camp Soldau in Dzialdowo, and used the parsonage as a warehouse. The present church is very interestingly furnished and has a wonderful polychrome painting by Wladyslaw Zych. In the crypt of the church rest: general Piotr Karol Bontemps and his wife Rose, nee Monfeull
The parish priest since 2002 is Rev. Ryszard Paradowski, assisted by priests Dariusz Pargulski and Marek Tomasz Wiśniewski.
