Kapliczka Świętej Kingi
Facts and practical information
St. Kinga's chapel - a chapel in Pieniny, by the green tourist trail from Krościenko to Sosnów Pass. It is located on the stone foundation below the valley Ociemne, by the Ociemne Creek. It is an old chapel, the date of its construction is not known. It is marked on the maps from the early nineteenth century, was renovated in 1905 and 1949. According to legend it was built in the place where St. Kinga crossed the Dunajec River escaping from the Tatars to her hiding place in the Pieniny Castle. Szczęsny Morawski wrote in 1863: "And at the foot of the Pieniny, immediately on the bank of the Dunajec, having disembarked, when she stepped on a great stone, the hard rock softened and the trace of her foot remained clearly imprinted, and from under the stone, on which she wept bitterly, a spring of bitter water gushed forth." The stone was later transported to the monastery in Stary Sącz. The spring is said to have successfully cured eye diseases. It doesn't exist anymore because according to the legend it dried out after being desecrated by an Italian worker who was building a path to a wooden bridge that used to take the road from Krościenko to Szczawnica to cross the Dunajec river near Zawiesiecie.
Inside the shrine are poems by Gorzkowski from about 1900. On the front wall of the shrine the inscription: "For the glory of God, the prosperity of the people, the repose of enemies".
