Anapji Pond, Gyeongju

Anapji Pond, an exquisite archaeological site located in the historic city of Gyeongju, South Korea, is a vestige of the Silla Dynasty's opulence and architectural ingenuity. Constructed in 674 CE under the auspices of King Munmu, this artificial pond was part of the palace complex of the ancient Silla capital.

The site, known formally as Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, was intended for royal banquets and leisurely activities. It is renowned for its scenic beauty, which is amplified by the reflection of the palace ruins and the three small islands strategically placed within the pond. Anapji Pond spans a sizable area, and at night, the illuminated water surface creates a mesmerizing and tranquil ambiance that captivates visitors.

Excavations in the 1970s revealed thousands of artifacts, providing invaluable insight into Silla culture and artistry. These include pottery, jewelry, and building materials, some of which are displayed in nearby museums, such as the Gyeongju National Museum.

Today, Anapji Pond remains a popular tourist destination, particularly at dusk when the setting sun casts a golden hue over the water and the surrounding lush gardens. The reconstructed pavilions and the lotus flowers that bloom in the summer add to the serene atmosphere of this historic site.
