St. Martinsplatz, Chur
Facts and practical information
Martinsplatz square in Chur, the capital of the canton of Graubünden, is located in the old town, which is reserved for slow traffic, between the lower and upper gates. It belongs to the oldest preserved part of Chur, formed the central point of the historical transit axis through the city and served, already attested in the early Middle Ages, as a goods transfer point.
It is dominated by St. Martin's Church as the main Reformed church of the city, from which it also got its name. In front of the church tower is St. Martin's Fountain, which is crowned by a sculpture of St. Martin of Tours in soldierly dress.
The house on Martinsplatz with rich decoration of the facade is - despite the name - already part of the neighboring square, the Arcas'.
