M. Rich Building, Atlanta
Facts and practical information
The M. Rich Building, also known as Rich's Department Store, is a historic building in downtown Atlanta in the United States. Its history dates back to 1867 when Morris Rich opened a small shop at the corner of Whitehall and Hunter streets (now Peachtree Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive). This establishment quickly expanded, becoming one of the most important department stores in the southern United States.
The building, which is now a landmark, was constructed in 1924 and expanded in 1946. Its architecture is a mix of Art Deco and neoclassical styles, making it one of the distinctive architectural features of Atlanta. For years, it served as the main headquarters of Rich's Department Store, which was not only a shopping destination but also an important social hub for the city's residents.
After the department store closed in 1991, the building underwent various transformations. In 2011, it was converted into a residential and service complex, while preserving many of its original architectural elements and historical character.
