Soldatenfriedhof Oberwölbling
Facts and practical information
Oberwölbling Military Cemetery is a military cemetery located above the center of Oberwölbling, about 12 km north of the Lower Austrian capital St. Pölten on the eastern edge of the Dunkelsteiner Forest. Here 4059 fallen soldiers of the Second World War from 362 Lower Austrian communities have found their final resting place. The dead had fallen in battles in the area during the last weeks of the war in April and May 1945.
The cemetery of about 15,000 m² is divided by an embankment into two parts slightly rising towards the edge of the forest. On the individual graves there are simple granite crosses of the same appearance, in which, as far as is known, the names and dates of life of the buried were engraved. On the highest flank of the site there is a high metal cross with a bell.
The cemetery was consecrated on September 17, 1983 and was transferred to the care of the Austrian Ministry of the Interior at the beginning of 2011.
