Schloss Weildegg
Facts and practical information
Weildegg Castle, also called Waldegg, is located in the village of Würmlach in the municipality of Kötschach-Mauthen.
In 1537, the Villach councilman and merchant Hieronymus Weyland the Elder converted an estate in Würmlach into a Renaissance castle. Today, the estate belongs to the Aichwalder family, which rents out vacation apartments in the castle and makes the building available for cultural events on a case-by-case basis.
The castle is a fortress-like, three- to four-story, square building with four circular corner towers and a tent roof. The attic floor is pierced by shooting windows, and on the east side there is a pitch nose above the entrance. Windows and doors are framed by sgraffito flaps. The two biforium windows above the eastern and western entrance gates belong to a large hall with painted coats of arms of the Kulmer and Gängel-Ehrenwert families from 1648.
