Royal Golf Center Course, Copenhagen
Facts and practical information
Royal Golf Center is Copenhagen's first international golf course for hosting large tournaments with 30,000 to 40,000 spectators. Royal Golf Center will be built on a 120 ha natural area in the middle of Ørestad City on Amager - located between Vejlands Allé, Amager Motorway, Øresundsbanen and Bella Center. Construction of the facility started in spring 2005 and is finally expected to be completed in spring 2010 with the construction of an 18-hole golf course. However, parts of the facility are already expected to open during 2006 and 2009. Course architect Ron Kirby, one of the world's leading experts, has inspected the terrain and designed the project to host events such as the Ryder Cup. Membership of the course costs DKK 100,000 plus VAT, while the annual subscription runs to DKK 15,000 plus VAT. Only 1,000 certificates are available in the associated exclusive club, the Royal Golf Club, which will be founded at a general meeting in early 2009.
Real estate agent and businessman Poul Sundberg is the man behind the large-scale project on Kalvebod Common, which has invested around a hundred million kroner as the sole investor. He is now director of the company behind the Royal Golf Center A/S facility. He is also the owner of other golf centres, Forum Copenhagen and several properties. He has been a member of the Bella Center board for several years. He is also involved in DBU's Club 100, as well as both FC Copenhagen and Brøndby IF.
Royal Golf Center was previously called 'Royal Copenhagen Golf Center', but had to change its name in February 2006. The Supreme Court ruled on 13 February, as a result of a lawsuit, that the name was too close to Copenhagen Golf Club's other name Royal Copenhagen Golf Club and the name was confusing with the name Royal Copenhagen Golf Club. Royal Copenhagen Golf Center a/s is prohibited from using names, including domain names, in which the word composition consisting of Royal Copenhagen is included in connection with the operation of golf facilities and golf events. Royal Copenhagen Golf Center a/s shall have deleted from the register of the Danish Business and Companies Agency company names in which the wording consisting of Royal Copenhagen appears. Royal Scandinavia had granted Copenhagen Golf Club a licence to use the trade mark Royal Copenhagen in connection with the club name.
