Saint Vaast Church

Facts and practical information

The Saint-Vaast church is a Catholic parish church located in Nointel, France. It is a rather spacious building, which combines almost all architectural styles from Romanesque to Classical, except the Renaissance. The plan is regular, and fits into a rectangle, with a clear subdivision between nave, transept and choir. There is a central nave and two side aisles along the entire length. However, when looking at the details, it is easy to see that almost no part of the church is homogeneous, with the exception of the choir, which is an interesting testimony of the late radiant style. Its large chevet window has an exceptional five lancet filling. The base of the bell tower preserves an archaic Romanesque ribbed vault, which has been heavily altered. The nave is attractive because of its large arches at the same height as the side walls, and gothic and tuscan pillars face each other without breaking the harmony of the whole. The vaults are only fake and can be described as neo-Gothic. Outside the church, the western facade of the nave is the most remarkable element. It dates from the 1120s / 1130s and has a richly decorated portal and window. The central bell tower dates from the same period. It was redecorated in the flamboyant period without any real reconstruction. The church of Saint-Vaast was registered as a historical monument by order of November 7, 1927. The parish of Saint-Thomas-More de Nointel ceased to exist on January 1, 2018 with the distribution of its eight villages among four neighboring parishes. The church of Saint-Vaast joins the parish of the Heart of Christ of Clermont.
