Platz der Einheit, Potsdam
Facts and practical information
Platz der Einheit is one of the oldest squares in Potsdam, along with Bassinplatz and Plantage. Created under the soldier king Friedrich Wilhelm I, the square is bordered by the Wilhelmgalerie to the north, residential buildings to the east, the street Am Kanal to the south and Friedrich-Ebert-Straße to the west. It is an important public transportation hub.
On the square there was a statue of Frederick William III until 1950. To the northeast is Bassinplatz with the Peter and Paul Church and the French Church, and to the southeast is the Old Market with the Nikolai Church and the City Palace. Its current name refers to the forced unification of the SPD and KPD to form the SED, which is why there is always discussion about renaming it.
