Haus Hohe Pappeln, Weimar
Facts and practical information
The house "Hohe Pappeln" is the former home of Henry van de Velde in Weimar and is now used as a museum by the Klassik Stiftung Weimar.
In 1902, the Belgian architect and designer Henry van de Velde came to Weimar through the mediation of his friend and patron Harry Graf Kessler. Commissioned by the Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst, he was to advise the Thuringian crafts in stylistic matters and founded the Arts and Crafts Seminar, from which the Weimar School of Arts and Crafts emerged in 1908. In 1906/07, he had an Art Nouveau country house built for himself and his family according to his own designs, after the original rented apartment in Cranachstrasse in Weimar had become too small for the family of seven.
