Volkspark Potsdam, Potsdam
Facts and practical information
Volkspark Potsdam is located in Bornstedter Feld in the north of the city of Potsdam. The area extends over three kilometers to the Jungfernsee in the north and in the west to the "Lennésche Feldflur". To the south, it borders the ruined hill of Sanssouci Park and Nauener Vorstadt, and to the east, Pfingstberg. With an area of 65 hectares, the park comprises the subareas In den Wällen, Kleiner and Großer Wiesenpark, Remisenpark and Waldpark. The area, which is managed by the Bornstedter Feld development agency, is subject to admission.
The Volkspark is the youngest garden in Potsdam. From the 18th century, the area was used for military purposes, mainly as a military training ground. It was not until 2001 that Bornstedter Feld was redesigned in terms of landscape planning as the main site of the Federal Garden Show 2001. It is thus a modern garden of the 21st century and a people's park with recreational opportunities such as disc golf, jogging, inline skating, cycling and soccer. A main attraction is the large tropical hall of the Biosphäre Potsdam. The building houses about 20,000 tropical plants and small animals on several levels.
