The 1.5 × 2.0 meter monument made of bronze on stone was created in 1978 according to a design by the sculptor Bernd Altenstein. It stands by the Bischofsnadel, a former gate in the Bremen city wall.
The explanatory text of the list of Bremen monuments says: "While people are strolling along in the ramparts, they come across someone plunging through a wall at the height of the Bischofsnadel in Bremen - Mitte. The nature of the movement reveals that the person is moving quickly and powerfully, crossing over as if in a great run-up into another space that is not visible. The title of the bronze work "The end" leaves open which end it is. "To smile led the ambiguous addition to the sculpture from an unknown person "With glasses this would not have happened".
The sculptor Altenstein also created the monuments Fietje Balge at the Balge, Waller Gespräche at Wartburgplatz in Walle, Vier Jahreszeiten in Bürgerpark, Brunnenskulptur in Reeder-Bischoff-Straße and Unser Planet at Domshof.
