Endzeit, Magdeburg
Facts and practical information
Endzeit is a sculpture in the old town of Magdeburg.
The sculpture stands north of the Green Citadel, Magdeburg's Hundertwasserhaus, on Erhard-Hübener-Platz and is part of Magdeburg's Sculpture Park.
It was created in 1983 by Helmut Lander and deals with the theme of a nuclear war. The work is made of cast iron. Five up to 2.01 meter tall figures or their outlines stand on a concrete surface. In front of them are their, partly mutilated shadows.
The sculpture deals with the consequences of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Reference is made to the reports according to which the effect of the bomb was so strong that people were completely destroyed and only shadows of their outlines could be seen on ruins or paths. The work of the artist, who was living in the Federal Republic at the time, was created under the impression of the stationing of medium-range nuclear weapons in the Federal Republic following the NATO double decision.
