Papstkreuz, Regensburg
Facts and practical information
The Islinger Feld is located in the southern urban area of Regensburg, about 3.5 km as the crow flies from Regensburg's St. Peter's Cathedral. It extends south of the federal highway 3 between Oberisling and Burgweinting.
During his six-day pastoral tour of Bavaria in 2006, Pope Benedict XVI spent three days in Regensburg and celebrated Holy Mass on September 12 together with around 230,000 people in the area specially converted for the occasion. During the days of the Pope's visit, the approximately 55-hectare agricultural area was designated as a security zone in accordance with a general order issued by the city of Regensburg, and the A3 autobahn was closed to traffic in the relevant section on the day of the service.
This major ecclesiastical event is commemorated by a 16-meter-high cross made of steel and wood, next to which the altar island was located. The cross originally stood further south, but had to be moved about 35 meters in November 2006. In the vicinity of the cross, a small park is to be created on 7300 m². The land for the park is owned by the Thurn und Taxis family and leased to the city of Regensburg. The Diocese of Regensburg holds an annual "Prayer at the Cross" on September 12 to commemorate the Mass with the Pope.
