Karlsplatz, Heidelberg
Facts and practical information
Karlsplatz is a public square located directly on Heidelberg's main street, at the foot of Heidelberg Castle. It is named after the Grand Duke Karl Friedrich of Baden.
The square was first laid out in 1805 in place of the demolished Franciscan monastery. In the center of the square stands the Sebastian Münster Fountain, which was created by Michael Schoenholtz in 1978 when Karlsplatz was redesigned in the course of the construction of an underground parking garage. It commemorates the cosmographer and humanist Sebastian Münster, who worked in the Franciscan monastery for several years at the beginning of the 16th century.
Karlsplatz is not only home to the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences, the Palais Boisserée and the Roßhirt residence, but also to two of Heidelberg's oldest and best-known student pubs, as well as several fraternity houses, including the historic Mittermaierhaus. Generations of fraternity students have been guests at the Gasthaus Zum Seppl, built in 1634, and the Gasthaus Zum Roten Ochsen, built right next door in 1703.
