Lustgarten, Potsdam
Facts and practical information
The Lustgarten is the oldest garden complex in Potsdam. It is bordered by Breite Straße with the Marstall to the north, the Havel River to the east, the railroad embankment to the south and the Ministry of the Interior to the west. Created as a baroque garden under the Great Elector Frederick William for the city palace and half transformed into a flat parade ground under King Frederick William I, the rest was embellished by Frederick II and redesigned by Peter Joseph Lenné in 1829. After World War II, the removal of the city palace began with the construction of the Ernst Thälmann Stadium in the Lustgarten. During the construction of the Interhotel Potsdam in 1969, the Lustgarten disappeared beyond recognition. On the occasion of the Federal Garden Show in 2001, a new pleasure garden was created after the demolition of the Thälmann Stadium.
Demolition of the Mercure Hotel has remained a redevelopment goal for the Lustgarten since a 2016 resolution.
