Goliathhaus, Regensburg

Facts and practical information
The Goliath House is an imposing, crenellated, early Gothic, former house castle from the period 1220/30 in the old town of Regensburg. The house is situated in a north-south direction between the streets Goliathstraße in the north and Watmarkt in the south. The north facade is the widely known display front of the Goliath House and shows a painting of the fight between David and Goliath, which has been renewed several times since 1573, in the last version by the painter Franz Rinner from 1900. The former front of the Goliath House is the south facade facing the Watmarkt, which has one floor less because of the rising terrain. Accordingly, old house letters always call the building "Haus am Watmarkt". The house tower in the west occupies the entire depth of the house complex. Adjacent to the tower to the east is the residential building of the Goliath House, which until the end of the 18th century formed a structural unit with the neighboring Steuersche House. Both house castles were built on the foundations of the northern Roman wall of the legionary camp Castra Regina by the Regensburg patrician families who are assumed to be the builders. The Goliath House offers its impressive northern display front with the Goliath painting to all visitors who come over the Steinerne Brücke and use the Brückstraße, which rises slightly towards the city, to reach the city center.
