The main market of Trier is the central and one of the largest squares of the city.

It is located in the historic city center just outside the cathedral city in today's Mitte/Gartenfeld district. The most important urban business streets meet here. In 958, Archbishop Heinrich I endowed the Hauptmarkt with the market cross as a symbol of sovereignty. In the medieval city, the Hauptmarkt was the place where goods were sold and traded.

Two-thirds of the market reconstruction with houses of the Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism and Late Historicism has been preserved. Today, the market is characterized by numerous large and representative urban buildings, including the Hauptwache and the former Domhotel in the German neo-Renaissance style. There are also the Steipe, a burgher's house built around 1430 and rebuilt in the 20th century with the help of "creative preservation of monuments" and today the representative house of the city council, as well as the Red House with the saying about the legendary foundation of Trier by Trebeta. The church of St. Gangolf is accessible only through a Baroque gate from the market and is otherwise completely enclosed.

From the Main Market Square you can step through the Judenpforte into Judengasse and enter the former Jewish quarter of the city.
