Fontäne, Halle
Facts and practical information
The Halle Fountain is located on the Ziegelwiese, an inland island surrounded by the Saale to the west and the Mühlgraben to the east, situated in the Saaleaue district of the city of Halle. It is the third highest in Europe.
The fountain was erected and put into operation in 1968 on the occasion of the 10th Workers' Festival of the GDR, which took place from June 14 to 16. Located in the floodplain of the Saale, the drive and pump technology was completely submerged twice over the years, so that operation was hardly possible. Between 2007 and 2009, a private initiative succeeded in collecting a total of about € 250,000 in donations in kind and money, which made a complete renewal of the technology possible. Since 2009, the fountain has been in regular operation again.
The water fountain reaches a height of 80 meters with a pump motor power of 160 kilowatts. The pump capacity is up to 400 cubic meters per hour, the maximum pressure is 10 bar.
The water basin - the fountain pond - is artificial and has a capacity of about 25,000 cubic meters and an area of about 1 hectare. It was designed in the shape of an ellipse because of the prevailing wind conditions.
Since 2008, the Fountain Festival organized by the "Friends of the Halle Fountain" has been held annually in September on the Ziegelwiese.
