Kehlstein
Facts and practical information
Nestled in the picturesque Bavarian Alps of Germany, Kehlstein Mountain commands an imposing presence. This lofty peak, rising to an elevation of 1,834 meters, is renowned for its breathtaking views and historical significance. The mountain is most famous for the Kehlsteinhaus, also known as the Eagle's Nest, a chalet-style structure perched precariously at its summit.
The Kehlsteinhaus was commissioned by the Nazi Party for Adolf Hitler's 50th birthday, intended as a retreat and place to entertain dignitaries. Its construction in 1938 was an engineering marvel, involving the carving of a road through the mountain and the building of a brass-lined elevator shaft drilled directly into the heart of the mountain to access the summit.
Today, Kehlstein is a destination for tourists from all over the world. Visitors can ascend the mountain via the panoramic Kehlsteinstraße, a road that offers stunning alpine vistas. At the summit, the Kehlsteinhaus has been converted into a restaurant with an open terrace where guests can soak in the awe-inspiring views of the surrounding mountains and Salzach river valley below.
