Facts and practical information
The Lobbe windmill is a listed wind pump near Lobbe on the Mönchgut peninsula, which belongs to Rügen. The Western windmill is located east of the highway 292 and the accompanying bike path that connect Middelhagen and Lobbe.
It was built around 1920, according to other sources as early as 1900, as a so-called slow-moving waterworks and was used to skim off water. The green and reed areas around the Great Lobber Lake were drained with it. The height of the wind axis is 14 meters, the diameter of the wind rose is 9.9 meters. With the help of the wind power, an Archimedean screw was operated, which conveyed the water upwards from the area to be drained. The catchment area was about 5 km2, with the diked polder area being 2.6 km2. Draining the area in this way made agricultural use possible.
The function of the wind bailer was replaced in 1955 by the use of electrically operated pumps. The pump used today has a 37 kW motor and can pump up to 3150 m3 of water per hour. It has been completely out of service since 2015.
In 1987/88, the VEB Meliorationskombinat Rostock, Gingst branch, reconstructed the wind scoop, making it the last of the original 33 or so wind scoops built on Rügen between 1900 and 1965 to be preserved. Restoration work was carried out in 1997. During a storm in mid-November 2018, the wind rose crashed and many parts of it were destroyed. The damaged wind rose was recovered by the municipality of Mönchgut and should be repaired by autumn 2019, for which donations were collected. Since May 20, 2020, the repaired windmill stands again.
