Sausenburg

Perched atop the wooded crest of the Black Forest in the southwest of Germany, the ruins of Sausenburg Castle whisper tales of medieval grandeur and warfare. This historic stronghold, dating back to the early 13th century, was once the seat of the noble Sausenberg family and later became part of the Margraviate of Baden.
Today, the remnants of Sausenburg Castle draw visitors with the allure of its past and the stunning panoramic views it offers of the Kandern valley and the Vosges Mountains. Although time and the elements have worn away much of its structure, the castle's surviving portions, including the circular keep and fragments of the fortress walls, still evoke a sense of the power and prestige that once emanated from this hilltop.
The fortress was strategically important for controlling the surrounding area and was expanded and reinforced over the centuries. However, it met its ultimate demise in the 17th century during the devastating Thirty Years' War, which left it in ruins.
